Habitat for Humanity

Our church is proud to be joining other organizations in Chittenango to plan and construct a Habitat home. Habitat for Humanity is an international Christian association with the goal of providing low cost homes to people who are in need of housing. The new owners must participate in the construction of their home and be able to afford the mortgage. Of course, the costs to them are kept low by Habitat’s reliance on volunteer labor and fundraising. Most folks associate Habitat for Humanity with President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn because of their long-time support and hours of volunteer work. Actually, the organization was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller, who lived in Americus, Georgia, only seven miles from the Carters’ farm.

Currently, Chittenango is beginning the process of adding one more house to the over 300,000 homes that have been constructed internationally by Habitat. Pastor Doerr, Terry Shaler, Jane Marques, Nancy Roth, and Steve and Sue Rothamel have begun meeting with others in our community to plan for this new home. Already, the committee has selected a location, taken applications from eleven prospective homeowners and are now sifting through the applications to select the family for whom the home will be built. If all goes well, the closing on the land should occur during the second or third week of May.

Fundraising will be a vital part of this project and our church began by hosting a Folk Music Coffee House on April 25. This event was organized by Jen and Dan MacAlpine, and they sang along with Randy and Andrea Pittman. Also on hand, were Steve and Carol Manglos to entertain for us and to renew acquaintances. The evening was a great success, netting $750 for Habitat.

When Jesus spoke to the scribes in Mark 12:31, He said: “Love your neighbor as yourself,” and He identified this commandment as second only to the first commandment that instructs us to love God wholeheartedly. Habitat is one way for us to follow our Lord’s teachings.
