First Presbyterian Church of Chittenango

Local Outreach

In these days of so much sickness, despair, financial crisis and war, there is an ever present need for us to share the Love of God, give words of encouragement, and pray for one another. The Prayer Bear Ministry is one way God is using the Church Deacons to bring His love to those in need. This ministry originated in loving memory of Don Hallchurch, brother of Edie Pinager.

Each Prayer Bear wears a prayer tag that reads, "This is a Prayer Bear from the first Presbyterian Church of Chittenango. It has been in the sanctuary during services for one month absorbing the love and prayers of our faith community. Now it brings these caring thoughts to you."

These bears are a gift. It is not necessary to "pay" for a bear. However, if you feel led to donate a bear. please bring to the office or indicate on your donation that this is for the Prayer Bear Ministry. We can always use more bears for this ministry as there is always room for another bear.

If you take a bear, please sign the "Prayer Bear" Gift Sheet. This allows us an opportunity to place the recipient on the Prayer Request sheet and pray for them in the coming weeks.

Crafting Together is a stitching ministry designed to serve one another with our hands. Participants include community and church crafters. Some of the participants meet together regularly, while many work independently. Projects support church programs and area service agencies including the Syracuse Rescue Mission, Threads of Love (preemie items) and New Hope Ministry. Items created include prayer shawls; hats, mittens and scarves for all ages and sizes; preemie to full sized baby hats, booties and blankets; lap robes and afghans.

Our congregation regularly collects food, money, and volunteers to serve those needing food through the Sullivan County Food Bank. In 2011, the food pantry provided over 25,704 meals or helped 2,956 individuals.

We also proudly host Over the Rainbow Christian Pre-School!

The pre-school's goals are:

To provide a Christian Pre-School Program that offers children a safe, nurturing and creative environment to play and learn.

To offer an early childhood program that provides the concrete experiences and active exploration that will enable your child to develop a strong, positive foundation for learning.

Our congregation is also very involved with the local celebration of L.Frank Baum and the Wizard of Oz - called Oz-Stravaganza!
